What endorsement? No. 3 finisher holds out in council race

With San Jose Councilwoman Madison Nguyen headed into a November runoff against Minh Duong, a key question will be which one picks up the 3,600 votes that went to the other challengers in last week's primary.

Nguyen finished atop the five-way race with almost 4,400 votes, or 42 percent. That was more than 1,800 better than Duong, who got 24 percent. So those extra votes will be crucial to his chances in November.

Patrick Phu Le, the pharmacy manager who finished in third place with nearly 1,800 votes as of the most recent tally, said he won't personally support either Nguyen or Duong in November. He said Duong has demonstrated poor judgment in a host of matters, including legal disputes with a former campaign consultant and a landlord.

Duong said those matters involved simple misunderstandings. And Rudy Rodriguez, the insurance specialist who finished fourth with nearly 1,500 votes, says he'll back Duong in November.

"I believe he's the best choice of the two runoff candidates based on his experience and ability to unite the district," Rodriguez said.

As for Vietnam Nguyen, the recreation program specialist who finished last with less than 400 votes, he wasn't ready to discuss his thoughts.

Election's over, Cogan, get back to work already

In case you were wondering,

Jim

Cogan — who lost his bid to compete for the District 9 council seat — will be right back at work Monday as chief of staff to Councilman
Pete Constant.

"His job was not contingent on him winning or losing,'' said Constant, who supported Cogan's run.

Constant easily won re-election to his District 1 seat Tuesday, but his top aide came in third to Don Rocha and Larry Pegram, who head to the District 9 runoff this fall.

While plenty of campaign watchers predicted a Cogan-Rocha matchup in November, some said Cogan — who was heavily backed by labor unions — ended up being a casualty of growing anger over runaway public employee costs.

"I think of it like any sporting event — or even a card game,'' said a philosophical Cogan. "I played the cards I was dealt and did everything I could. But at the end of the day, I came up short.''

Cogan said he's having lunch next week with fellow Democrat Rocha to discuss a possible endorsement, but he added: "I really can't see a situation where I would feel comfortable endorsing Larry.''

In other postelection tidbits:

IA swung by Sam Liccardo's victory party in San Pedro Square Tuesday night. The mood at O'Flaherty's pub was festive, given that the San Jose councilman was winning overwhelmingly over former bar manager and virtual unknown Tim Hennessy.

"I actually just met him for the first time about four hours ago," a jubilant Liccardo told us. "I saw him on the street and said, 'You're Tim Hennessy!' "

A 20-minute drive later, IA found ourselves at the American Legion hall in Santa Clara, where pro-49ers partisans were celebrating the stadium measure's win. Among the bigwigs at the tailgate-casual affair were team owners John and Jed York, former 49er Randy Cross, Santa Clara Mayor Patricia Mahan and County Assessor Larry Stone.

When a local news broadcast cut away to the glum scene where the "No on J" side had gathered, everyone booed. "He looks sad," one person said of Santa Clara councilman Will Kennedy, one of two councilfolk who opposed Measure J. "He needs a hug."

Filming of movie is turning into a real team effort

If you've been by San Jose's Fairmont Hotel or Santana Row in the last few weeks, you might have noticed a film crew working on an upcoming movie, "I'm in Love with a Church Girl.'' It's the story of ex-drug dealer-turned-pastor and screenwriter Galley Molina.

Because Molina's working on a very low budget to tell a story that mirrors his own life, he's been using natural settings, instead of building costly sets, and borrowing as much stuff as he can for free. That's included getting loaner patrol cars from the San Jose Police Department for a scene where cops pull their (fake) guns on the main character, played by rapper Ja Rule.

It's also included free acting tips provided by the Internal Revenue Service office in Oakland. And Special Agent Arlette Lee drove down to Brokaw Road one recent weekend to drop off some official federal jackets for the cast to wear on-screen. As she's wont to do, Lee was sporting a smart-looking suit and packing a gun.

"You look good!'' a crew member shouted, then invited her to be an extra. Lee happily complied, and she and a Sacramento colleague will have a cameo when the movie comes out (later this year, Molina hopes).

Lee told IA that she didn't get paid for her brief appearance. But if she had, she quipped, "I definitely would pay my taxes on the income."

Vietnamese candidates are blood suckers like stinging mosquitoes as well!
They are all corrupted politicians with certainty! An RV of Dong is hardly possible.
If you have already bought a lot of Dong, ouch! I bet you'd get the rash soon.
Iraqi Dinar must first be revalued before Dong and Yuan could do so, altogether.
