France will support Iraq to be exempt of Chapter 7
Saturday, July 31st 2010 11:28 AM
Baghdad, July 31 (AKnews) - France officially expressed its willingness to end Iraq’s Chapter Seven status, a source in the Iraqi government said on Friday.
"French ambassador, Boris Boillon, assured on Thursday that his country was willing to support Iraq to be exempt from Chapter Seven in order to improve the political and economic situation in the country," said Ahmed al-Shihany, an adviser in the government.
Iraq has been under Chapter Seven status since its invasion of Kuwait in 1990 when the United Nations’ Security Council recognized Iraq as a threat to international peace.
"The Iraqi government submitted a formal request last month to France to get its support, particularly during the coming meeting of the United Nations," Said Shahiny.
"The chapter is the main obstacle that prevents Iraq from achieving its full freedom," he added.
