Iraqi committee forms means of exiting Chapter VII

    Mazen Sahib

BAGHDAD: An Iraqi parliamentarian underscored the importance of Iraq being cleared from the UN Security Council''s Chapter VII listing, particularly since Iraq is eager to maintain positive relations with Kuwait.

This comes at a time when an Iraqi executive committee has finalized a plan to exit the said chapter.

A government statement Monday reported that the executive committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Nouri Shawis has wrapped up a series of meetings aimed at setting out mechanisms to ensure protection for Iraqi funds deposited abroad, as well as outlining a government plan to look into loans and claimed compensations that were inherited from the former regime.

The Iraqi Cabinet is scheduled to discuss the committee''s report to be presented to the UN Security Council through the Iraqi Financial Experts Committee before April 1, in accordance with Sections 4 and 5 of Security Council Resolution 1905, which requests the Government of Iraq to report to the Council on a quarterly basis.

The committee concluded that the current report contains proposals that enable Iraq to fulfill its obligations toward the said resolution, while other procedures can be completed within the coming months.

In the same vein, Member of Iraq''s Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee MP Tania Talat has urged the UN Security Council to adopt resolutions "in support" of Iraq as long as the country does not pose a threat to its neighbors. She pointed out that consultations and discussions are still ongoing between Iraq and Kuwait under the supervision of the United Nations.

According to the legislator, Iraqi, including both the executive and legislative authorities, has diligently worked to resolve the loans issue, noting that bilateral relations are going in the right direction, and affirmed her country''s eagerness to maintain good relations with Kuwait.
