Iraq officially informs UNSC of public announcement regarding Kuwaiti property

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 19 (KUNA) -- Iraq on Friday officially informed the UN Security Council (UNSC) that it had made a public announcement in a local newspaper earlier this month urging anyone in possession of Kuwaiti documents or property stolen during the 1990 invasion to return them to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a letter to the council president, France, Iraqi Ambassador to the UN Haamid Al-Bayati wrote that the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a public announcement in the official newspaper Al-Sabah on February 1st, calling on anyone who is in possession of any documents or Kuwaiti properties previously seized by the former regime during the 1990 occupation of Kuwait to deliver them to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that "they may be returned to the Kuwaiti authorities in implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions".
The text of the announcement annexed to Al-Bayati's letter read: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon anyone in possession of any Kuwaiti documents or property that were seized by the former regime during its occupation in 1990 of the fraternal State of Kuwait to hand over the same to the aforementioned Ministry so that they may be returned to the Kuwaiti authorities, pursuant to the relevant Security Council resolutions".
Iraq is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to show the UNSC that it is complying with various council resolutions so that it comes out from under Chapter VII.
Al-Bayati told a UN gathering earlier this week that after the fall of Saddam regime, mobs stormed the ministries, vandalized and set on fire their belongings. (end) sj.bs KUNA 191921 Feb 10NNNN
