3rd Brig. Commanders: Iraqi Parliamentary Election a “Tremendous Success”

Words like “historic,“ “generational,“ “family event,“ and “tremendous victory” were used to describe the second parliamentary election in Iraq held earlier this month, despite some incidence of violence.
“Democracy is not built on just one election,“ said Col. Peter Jones, commander of Ft. Benning’s 3rd Brigade. “Democracy is build on at least two elections and a peaceful transfer of power. And Iraq has never had that, and that’s what this election was.“
The election will decide on a government to guide Iraq as American forces prepare to leave the country. This is the second election for a full parliamentary team since U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Commanders said that there may be some trepidation among Iraqi security forces as the U.S. begins its departure, but that they are well-equipped to lead the country into democracy.
Jones described the pride some Iraqis took in voting. He referred to a photograph of a man making a peace sign with his hand, revealing an ink-stained finger, indicating that he had voted in the 2010 elections.
Attacks to derail the elections were primarily in Northwest Babil province. All of the polling sites remained secure, according to Jones.
