The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Ali al-Faily, said on Friday (February 1, 2019) that the justification for the US presence in Iraq is still present, especially with the political turmoil and security in the country.

"The country is still in a state of political, security and economic turmoil at the current stage, so the presence of these US forces is necessary,"Faily said in an interview with Baghdad today.

"The political parties are also still fighting each other, so the exit of these forces depends on the arrival of the leaders of the country to political maturity and the construction of a real political system."

He pointed out that "the base of the lion is one of the largest American bases in the region."

On Sunday (Jan. 27, 2019), Kurdistan Regional Government President Nigervan Barzani confirmed that the presence of US troops in Iraq was necessary.

Barzani told a news conference in Arbil that "the presence of US forces in Iraq, is necessary to help the security forces as long as the organization remained in the country."

He said that "he is behind many martyrs in the ranks of the Peshmerga forces and the popular crowd, an enemy of all of us, but he is now threatened by security cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil."

He added: "We have come a long way in our discussions with the Iraqi government and there is close cooperation, especially with regard to the security aspect and the exchange of intelligence to fight Dahesh."

Barzani stressed that "his position is consistent the need to resolve outstanding issues with Baghdad through understanding and dialogue on the basis of the Constitution."
