Concerns over governmental infringe of freedoms in Iraq
Wednesday, December 1st 2010 7:09 PM
Baghdad, Dec.1 (AKnews) - A legal expert expressed fear on Wednesday in regard to the "violation" of civil freedoms due to practice of religion by officials in the Iraqi government and provinces’ councils.
Ibrahim al Jaff told AKnews that the provinces’ councils closed down some night clubs and alcohol drinks’ stores, which represents a clear violation of civil liberties.
He said that the second chapter of the Iraqi constitution stipulates the need to respect civil liberties; however, executive authorities are violating the freedoms under religious and sectarian claims.
The Iraqi Union of Writers condemned the closure of its social club by an Iraqi military force, through forcing the manager to sign a memorandum of closing the club like other nightclubs in Baghdad.
Al Jaff said that the Iraqi government must ensure the protection of the Constitution and the implementation of its provisions with regard to public and private freedoms and to prevent any violation of it whatsoever.
Baghdad’s Council announced earlier that the security committee of the Council in cooperation with the Iraqi security forces and the representative Office of the general command of the Armed Forces began a campaign to close down all the halls and gardens used illegally as night clubs.
