BAGHDAD: Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki on Thursday called for Iraqi football fans to stop firing celebratory gunfire when the national team plays well, as the practice has already left one person dead.
His remarks come ahead of Iraq’s Gulf Cup of Nations semi-final match against neighbouring Kuwait in Aden, Yemen, on Thursday afternoon, with Maliki calling for “legal measures” to be brought against those who fire their weapons to mark success for the Iraqi national football side.
“The commander-in-chief of the armed forces has called on the security forces to take legal measures against those who fire their guns” in celebration, the statement said, referring to Maliki.
