CAIRO, Dec 12 (KUNA) -- Iraq does not need US forces to maintain security at the Arab Summit scheduled in Baghdad in March 2011, Iraqi Assistant Defense Minister Lieut. Gen. Aiden Khaled Al-Askari said on Sunday.
After meeting the Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Financial and Administrative Affairs Samir Saif Al-Yazal, Al-Askari told reporters that "Iraqi forces control security in their country now, and that this has been the case for over a year." Iraq's security plan include the protection of VIPs, buildings, roads and attendees of the summit, he said, adding that there is a great Iraqi and Arab willingness to hold the summit in Baghdad.
The security committee, which was formed according to the instructions of the prime minister and Ministry of Defence, of security forces, the intelligence and other ministries is responsible for control and command, and is working towards making the huge event a success, he added.
For his part, the Arab League representative said that he had briefed the Iraqis on the security and logistical needs of the summit.
He also expressed the keenness of both sides to work collectively, stressing that the Arab Summit would be an Iraqi-hosted one.
