UNAMI says IHEC to decide future steps
Friday, March 26, 2010 12:02 GMT
United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said that the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) is the only party that is qualified to determine the steps to be taken in the future and when to announce the results of the elections stressing at the same time that it will not provide any technical help in the upcoming stages unless Iraq Government asks for it. In this context, UNAMI envoy to Iraq Ed Melkart told Alsumaria News that the work of the International Organization is restricted to providing technical help and support to the IHEC and it does not have any monitoring role in this regard. Melkart said that announcing the preliminary results of the elections is necessary in order to form a new government and for other reasons related to the transitional phase Iraq is going thru.
UN representative in Iraq uttered that the votes of the electors who participated in the Iraqi legislative elections that took place on March 7 are taking place according to the established techniques that IHEC adopts and it is the sole party entitled of deciding future steps in this regard.
