Iraq welcomes new Saudi Ambassador
BAGHDAD, Feb. 21 (AKnews) – Iraq has welcomed Saudi Arabia’s steps to assign an ambassador to the country.
Advisor to Iraq’s PM Maryam al-Rais said the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry informed the Iraqi Council of Ministers about its willingness to base an ambassador in Baghdad.
“Iraq is seeking to establish distinguished ties will all the [Arab] states, including Saudi Arabia,” Rais said.
Media reports have suggested that the Saudi ambassador to Jordan Fahd Zaid will be assigned as the ambassador of his country to Baghdad in anticipation of the Arab summit. The summit is due to be held in Baghdad in March.
Rais added that Iraq “does not object” if the Saudi ambassador works in Baghdad or from the Jordanian capital Amman.
Riyadh has not yet explained the reason for its lack of diplomatic representation in Baghdad, despite the fact that the majority of US forces who toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime crossed the western and southern parts of Saudi soil to reach Iraq.
Iraq-Saudi relations cooled down after the 2003 US-led invasion. Relations between the two countries reached a climax between 1980 and 1988 when Saudi was the most influential supporter of Iraq in its war against the Shiite-ruled Iran.
