BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister, Rafea al-Issawi, has conferred in his office here on Wednesday with the U.S. Ambassador to Baghdad, James Jeffery and the Commander of the U.S. Forces in Iraq, General Austen, on the recent political and security developments in the country, a statement by Issawi’s office has announced.

“The meeting discussed the recent political and security developments in the Iraqi arena, the bilateral relations within the Strategic Agreement, concluded between Baghdad and Washington, and the current dialogues among the parliamentary blocs to form a government of national-partnership in Iraq,” the statement pointed out.

Iraq’s previous parliament had ratified the said Agreement on Nov. 27, 2009, related to the situation of the U.S. forces in Iraq, in compliance with the “Reforms Document,” issued by the government. The agreement focused on bettering the political and economic conditions, represented in the improvement of the public conditions, and to cease political violations and the release of prisoners.

“Issawi,” according to the statement, “had reaffirmed the necessity of active participation in the new government, in order to satisfy the prerequisites of the Iraqi people, through the improvement of security and rendering necessary services for the people.”

The statement quoted Ambassador Jeffery as having reaffirmed “the U.S. administration’s persistence to support the democratic reforms in Iraq and to upgrade its political status, through guaranteeing security and stability of its people.”

The Strategic Agreement, signed between Baghdad and Washington, had laid down the legitimate basis for the presence of the U.S.-led forces in Iraq after the end of the UN mandate. The Agreement also finalized the withdrawal of the U.S. combat troops to bases outside Iraqi cities at the end of June, 2009, along with the commitment of their complete withdrawal from Iraq within three years.
